Sunday - 3/4/12
I'm giving a talk tonight at the Yoga Center, the third in my series.
I'm spending most of the day focusing on that.
It's been good for me, helping me to get re-centered, reminding me that I have to keep focus on the things I want to accomplish (like becoming financially free) and that I need to do it all in joy. The universe pays attention to emotions. Joy attracts. Even if it didn't though, why be in anything but joy? Life is good!
The talk went well. Once again it's a real blessing to have Charles' truck. Not having to think about how to get from one place to another is a great thing!
I'm stopping at Mother's Market and picking up the "heavier" groceries that I avoid when I'm traveling by bus. I don't feel like doing it, but now is when I have the truck. So, now is when it needs to happen.
Next stop will be my work. I took some things down with me for later this week and want to leave them in my office, along with some bottles of water I got from Mother's.
Wow! I must have been really energized for the talk. It's 1am and I'm not tired yet. I should have taken some melatonin and gone to bed ages ago, but I didn't think about it then. Now it's too late since I get up in just a couple of hours. I'm going to lay down and see if I can get some sleep anyway.
I have debt I'm paying off, and my car needs a new transmission. Rather than fix it, I’m parking the car for a year and working on paying down my debt. This isn't the easiest thing to do, but I am committed to doing that and to being true to myself. I want my kids and grandkids to think of me as someone who was free, who lived her principles and did something different when it was needed. This is about me learning to do something different. I hope others will enjoy and support my progress.

A Little Bit Down - 3/3/12
Saturday 3/3/12
One day a month I look at every account I owe money to and put the new balance, minimum payment and due date into an excel spreadsheet. That keeps my mind focused on paying everyone off. I also track the total amount owed each month. So, I can watch it going down little by little.
It's earlier in the month than I normally do this. A couple of the balances aren't available yet because the statements are still being processed. It's nice to see that I have the new, lower balance with Chase. I'm a little disheartened, though, looking at everything. I tell myself this is a process. I just have to keep going and keep putting energy toward being financially free.
Tonight, I'm taking Charles out for a late (his birthday was a couple weeks ago) birthday dinner. I know he likes steak. So, when I saw a groupon for a place that specialized in steaks, I bought it. That way we get to try the place out at 1/2 off and I get to tell him that I appreciate him! I don't think there will be much there that I can eat, being Vegan, but most places around here will be able to do something and I'm looking forward to going out! I miss eating out!
I've even looked up the bus routes around Charles. So, we could take the bus to the restaurant if we wanted. That way he doesn't have to drive at all if he doesn't want to, and it would be truly me taking him out!
It's a beautiful sunny day. I don't know if I'm taking a bus back home afterward, or if Charles will drive me, or if I'm borrowing the truck again (I'm teaching tomorrow night and the truck would be handy for that.) I pack my thermal underwear, scarf and hat into the backpack, just in case I need it later for riding the bus home.
The trip to the bus stop is nice. I've got my blinky light shoes on (I decided they were more "formal" for eating out), the day is lovely and I'm having fun riding my scooter. An old friend told me that the thought of me propelling the scooter forward with blinky light shoes on and my hair blowing in the wind was "charming." I didn't dress this way because of that, but now, as I'm going to the bus stop I'm thinking about that and enjoying being "charming."
There isn't anyone at the bus stop. This could be a bad sign. I was sure I was on time, but I could have messed up. The bus going the opposite direction passes. I breathe a sigh of relief. I take that as a sign that my bus is still coming.
It's now ten minutes later and there isn't any bus. I must have missed it. I use my iphone to check both google maps and metro.net. Both say they can't get me to Charles' until a little after 7pm (our restaurant reservations are for 7). I call Charles and ask him what he wants to do. I can probably call the restaurant and change the reservation.
When I tell him I missed my bus, he thinks I'm stranded somewhere and is prepared to immediately take off to come get me. I have to start over and tell him I missed the first bus and can easily go back home or to a different bus stop to wait for a later bus. He tells me he's going to come get me. That's cool. I'm disappointed though. Here I thought I had my act together and I missed the bus and he's having to come get me.. all so I can take him out to dinner... not my plan at all! The scooter trip home is a little slower and less cheery than the one out had been. It will all still be good though. I know that.
Charles picked me up and we drove straight to the restaurant and then of course had to find parking. My brain is reminding me that if we had taken the bus out we wouldn't have this issue. We ended up using a parking garage. The restaurant "The Gaucho Grill" (in Long Beach) seems nice. I don't think the waiter had ever heard the word Vegan before though, and from the responses back from the Chef, I don't think he had either. I order a plain salad with oil and vinegar and a sauteed mushroom appetizer that sounds interesting. Charles got the filet minion.
They've been having some issues at Charles' place. That was the conversation for the evening. I'm glad I was there for him to vent to, and, heck, it was his birthday celebration so he could do whatever he wanted. Not the most fun time though.
The salad is just a large heap of shredded lettuce with some pepper strips in it. I'm halfway through my meal when I realize the appetizer never came. I gave up and decided not to try for it. Charles said his steak was a little dry. I think we won't be going back there.
It's the end of the night. I hug Charles goodbye, and climb back into his truck. I am borrowing it once more.

Friday Night On The Bus - 3/2/12
Friday - 3/2/12
It's Friday night. I seem to have the routine down. I was definitely to the bus stop on time! The bus wasn't though. It's taking forever. Two other buses stop while most of the crowd at the bus stop stands and waits. The bus I'm waiting for, the 43 is the most popular.
There is a lovely petite hispanic woman, in her late 20s, standing with her son, holding bags of groceries. We're talking about buses and how frustrating it is to be on the opposite corner of the street waiting for the light to change when the bus comes. There isn't anything you can do at that point except wave goodbye to the bus and wait for the next one.
We see a bus go by, with "not in service" on it's readout. Some of the people here say that's why our bus is late. I don't know why buses go out of service. I'll have to figure that out. I do know that some days I'll see up to five not in service buses and other days I won't see any. So it seems like something that's been scheduled, though that may not be true.
The bus finally comes. It's 15 minutes late. By the time we get to my transfer stop, at Disneyland, we're 20 minutes late. I've missed my bus. There isn't anything to do but put my backpack and scooter down and wait for the next bus.
Even though I'm sitting right here, I almost missed the bus! The 460 always comes down from LA, drops people off, then goes off and parks for a 5 to 10 minute break. After that, it comes back and picks up people for LA. The bus came and dropped people off. When the normal line formed outside it's door I laughed at them and stayed sitting. I knew it wouldn't take on passengers until after it's break time. I wasn't even paying attention and then I happened to notice that it's readout had changed to LA! Which means it wasn't taking a break! I grab my stuff, head for the bus and get in line at the very back of the line. I'm so grateful that I noticed the readout change! I could have been waiting here for another hour!
The traffic is bad. The bus is definitely running late. I have the thought that I'm often doing other things on a Friday night. This may be the normal traffic pattern for Fridays. I can't remember if I've ridden a bus home on Friday before or not. I know I'd remember if I'd been in this kind of traffic / backup on the bus before. Finally, we come up on an area where there's a police blockade. That must be the problem. Now that we've worked our way past it, the traffic is better. It still isn't good, but definitely better!
I'm so grateful to finally be home! I don't want to leave ever again! Well, ok. I know tomorrow I'll feel differently, but for now, that's how I feel. I'm going to grab some food, watch a tiny bit of tv, and then go to bed!

Overslept!! - 3/2/12
Friday - 3/2/12
I woke up at 2:06 this morning. It wasn't much. I just woke up, checked the clock, and went back to bed. I didn't have to be up for another hour.
This time, it seems late, which starts thoughts of panic. I look over at the clock and it says 4:42. My brain isn't processing. I know though that it's after the time I should have left for the bus. I think I've missed both buses. Now, I'm panicked!
With all the backup plans I've made and all the possible backup rides I have, I never thought about what happens if I totally miss the bus down to orange county! I might be able to call Charles and get him to give me a ride down, but I can't always reach him. So, it definitely isn't a sure thing. I could call another teacher and have them teach my first class. I don't want to do that. I'm the teacher and I want to be there. I suppose I might be able to rent a car if I could find a rental place that's open this early. While all this is going on in my brain, I pull up Google maps on the computer to see what it says.
Google tells me I haven't missed the second bus yet! It says I have eight minutes to get dressed, get my stuff and get out of the apartment! I'm so glad for a chance to make it! I don't bother with much, just the bare basics: brush teeth and hair, grab clothes, phone, and iPod. I grab a small container of steamed veggies from the fridge for lunch, and stuff it into my almost empty backpack. I emptied the backpack last night and didn't repack it. I was planning on doing that this morning. No time for that now! I got around so fast I have to take a moment at the door to think if there's anything absolutely essential that i'm leaving behind. I can't think of anything and in the end, I'm the main essential since I need to be at yoga class. I take off. I think I actually left in eight minutes! I don't want to take chances, though. I'm pushing myself to go fast all the way, while thoughts of what to do if I don't make it run through my mind.
I'm on the bus! Yay! I'm so grateful and happy! I know I'll have another push at the other side, but I'll be able to get to the Yoga Center on time! One thing I'm noticing is that even though I had been tense, once I got on the bus I relaxed. There isn't anything I can control here. If I'd been driving a car and had left late due to oversleeping, I would have been tense all the way down: hoping to shave a minute or two off the time, hoping that there aren't any traffic jams. Interesting difference.
I finally got a chance to check on my ipod to see why it didn't wake me up. It looks like the battery died. Possibly I didn't have it firmly in the cradle. I'll have to double check right before I go to bed from now on.
I managed to get to the Yoga Center a whole four minutes before class time! Yay! I'm thrilled! What a great outcome!

An Extra Day At Home! - 3/1/12
Thursday - 3/1/12
Wow. A day at home I hadn't planned on! This feels awesome!
I'm going to miss the grandkids, but I love being home too!
I'm wandering around, getting a few things done, dancing to the music playing on my stereo.
A few days ago an old love of mine contacted me through linked-in. He just wanted to check in and see how my life went. Our conversations have brought up all kinds of memories and feelings from the past. It's hard to get anything done today. I seem to be stuck in thinking about what was. It's interesting to think about who I was then, compared to now. In some ways, I'm so very different. In other ways I'm still that same person.
Getting ready for bed now. It's 11:30. Morning is going to come way too soon. I did take pictures of some eBay items, signed a lease with a new tenant, cooked kidney beans, baked bread, did some dishes, and gave myself some time off to play games. Mostly, I think I spent the day thinking about the past and the present.... words said and not said... options taken and not taken.
My ipod (which is still set on random) has been playing a collection of old songs, sad songs and love songs. I think it's funny how the random that apple does on the ipod often mirrors where my mind is.
It's cold tonight. I'm not looking forward to the trip to the bus stop in the morning, but at least it's not going to rain!

Changing Overnight Plans - 2/29/12
Wednesday - 2/29/12
I started out today feeling like I had all the time in the world. I finished some paperwork for my work, packaged a few things to mail out and drove (yes drove) all of the things over to the post office, since the work paperwork was late and I still had Charles' truck.
Now, I'm running late again. I'm not quite sure how that happened. I need to pack my backpack for staying over-night tonight and watching my Grandchildren tomorrow. I also need to leave early enough that I can drop Charles' truck off and catch a bus from there to Avalon. I wanted to leave with enough time to socialize, but that isn't going to happen.
At Charles' now. I just hand him the key, give him a hug, a thank you and remind him that I'm taking him out for a late birthday dinner on Saturday and take off. I didn't see a bus go by as I was nearing the bus stop. So, I might be on time. It's close though. I look at my directions. Oops! I had the bus number wrong in my mind. I think I passed the bus I was supposed to get on as I was driving to Charles'. Oh well. The good thing about traveling in the day time is that you know for absolute certainty that there will be another bus sooner or later.
I check Google maps. They give me a totally different route now. I'll get to work 20 minutes late. We're all rented and I'm normally on time. So, I don't think that will be a problem. I'm waiting for the Long Beach 91, which oddly enough is the bus I originally thought I needed (though originally I was supposed to get on the 93). The 94 stops and I wave it on. Then, I start thinking about it. I know very little about the Long Beach bus system, but I think the 91, 92, 93, and 94 all go the same way for part of the trip. I wonder if the 94 would have taken me to the original transfer point. I check the map and it would have! Arrrggg!! I bet I would have made the connecting bus too, and would have made it to work on time! Oh well, this is how you learn things: trial and error. It does definitely give me a chance to ride different buses!
It turns out that the Long Beach 91, 92, 93 and 94 all stop at the bus stop near Charles' place and all go to the same generic transfer point where you can catch buses headed for Orange County. It's outside the VA hospital. Nice that we take care of the veterans in that way. Anyway, next time, I won't worry about what bus to take from Charles' when I'm going to work, I'll just get myself to the bus stop and catch the first one of those four that comes by! Then, I can check Google Maps while in transit to find what bus I should take from the transfer point.
My backpack is really heavy today. It's heavy with things for the sleep-over, and some rain gear and today's lunch. I'm definitely going to have muscles at the end of this year!
The bus I take from the transfer point ends up going all the way down Westminster Boulevard. I used to live close to there. So, I know the area. I almost missed the point I needed to get off! I was so wrapped up watching all the businesses and trying to see what had changed!
I was drinking a lot of water this morning. Great for the body, but not so great for bus rides. I could really use a potty break! I check my schedule and see that I have 8 minutes until the bus is supposed to come. I walk to the nearby donut place. They don't have a public restroom. I decide not to chance going farther away. I can see a Stater Brothers Grocery, but it would take me awhile to get there and get back, and since I'm already going to be late for work, I don't want to be any later. Though, the pod belt I use to hook my purse onto is starting to be uncomfortable, pressing in the wrong places!
The bus is late. I would have had time to go to Stater Brothers, but now I don't. I'm rethinking that right as the bus shows up on the horizon. I guess I'll wait!
I'm at work now. It turns out that my Daughter had canceled tomorrow as a babysitting day and I hadn't taken it off of my calendar! Oh well! Change of plans! I'm going home tonight! I had a couple of people hold long conversations with me today at the office. Work went by really quickly. I didn't even eat my lunch! I'm leaving with the exact same heavy load that I came here with! How funny! I'm definitely going to build muscles!

No Recall - 2/28/12
Tuesday - 2/28/12
Today is my day at home. I feel like I want / need a "day off!"
However, I need to spend today trying to catch up on things that I've let slide.
At least this time I didn't try to schedule anything else for today. I don't have to go anywhere. So, it will be a day at home!
I'm going to have to get better organized so that I can keep doing the bus thing. Being away from home more has had it's impact on the things I normally do at home: selling on eBay, doing some things for the job here, and keeping the place clean and organized (OK, I'll be truthful and say that the last two have always been challenges for me, but the challenge certainly is a bit tougher with being gone so much. It seems like I come home, mess the place up, sleep, mess the place up some more and then leave.
I emailed the freecycle member on Sunday, asking her to look into the possibility of a recall on my car transmission. I haven't heard back from her. I bet my email got lost in all of the other emails from freecycle. I'm searching the web now to see if I can find out anything about a recall.
I found out that Acura has a web site. I didn't remember it, but apparently I've seen it before because I had an id set up there already (isn't it funny when that happens?!) They let me put the vin number in to search for any recalls. There was one, for something else, but it says that has been fixed on my car. So, no transmission recall. I know I said I wasn't going to get my hopes up, but it's very disappointing. That would have been such a great help. Oh well, the best I can do is to keep going forward and working on being financially free!
